Mini-Session :: Tana

I recently had occasion to spend some time with Tana, a playful six-year old Bernese Mountain Dog, late on a gorgeous spring day. She spent our brief session romping (there’s no better word to describe how she runs) across the short-cropped grass and sniffing the many scents of the UC Davis Arboretum. Since it was a little warm out and she has that beautiful thick coat, she was also fond of lying in the shade between runs.

The Colors of Spring :: 52 Weeks of Photos

I’m part of a group of pet photographers that post an image or series of images every Friday that reflect on a particular theme as part of a “52 Project” — or a project to take a new photo every week for a year. Each photographer links to one another in a way that allows you to click through and view some great photos of some very cute pets.:-)Follow along by clicking the link in each post until you find yourself back where you started — here!

Even though it’s only April, calling my weekly photo project a “52 Project” is very generous at this point! But while I don’t always find the time to take part in the weekly assignment, I love that it’s always there, giving me a reason to go out and shoot things that I wouldn’t necessarily photograph otherwise. Like this week, with a looming deadline and the weather nice after a midweek rainstorm, I decided to take Sam on a walk and just see what we could come up with. I ended up finding so many colors that I couldn’t fit them all in one photo, so I put together the photo collage below. I hope you like it!

If you’d like to see more color, head on over to see what Central Coast Pet Photographer Sharon Stokes has in store. 🙂 Since she lives in another hemisphere, I’m willing to bet that the colors are a tad different!

Kirby and Franklin

Kirby is a rescued Welsh Corgi who has just begun to settle into his forever home with owner Melissa and fellow Corgi (and past star of this blog), Franklin. He is an earnest, expressive dog that loves to curl up on your feet when he’s not bounding through grass or chasing after his older brother. It didn’t take me long to fall in love with him.

The four of us spent a beautiful morning this past weekend in a Sacramento park that could easily pass as doggy heaven; open fields, miles of trails winding through lush greenery, jackrabbits loping through the underbrush, and sandy beaches fronting a slow-moving river — all it was missing were treats (and we brought those in spades).

This week’s theme — imitation — made me take a moment to reflect on the photos that I’ve admired and that inspire me as a pet photographer. One of those was a shot taken by a gentleman named Alexander Gardner of his Lab, Kody, looking back out of a rear car window, waiting for Alexander to get in the car so they could go on an adventure together. It’s such a simple but joyful shot, and tugs at the heart of what I enjoy most about pet photography — the bond between pets and their people. So it’s with a nod to Alexander that I gladly offer my own take on his shot this week.

As this is a blog ring, we encourage visitors to see what the other photographers in the group have come up with. This week I’m linking to San Diego Pet Photographer Terran Bayer of Westway Studio. Terran, like every member of the group, does great work — so don’t miss out on the chance to see what she came up with for this week. Thanks for stopping by!

Ginger

Ginger is a playful Chocolate Lab that I’ve had the pleasure of knowing for a number of years. She is responsible for convincing me that, after never really having had a strong connection with a dog as a child or teenager, I wanted to raise a dog of my own as an adult. (It’s not a coincidence that Samantha is also a Chocolate Lab!) So really, if it weren’t for Ginger, I might never have started my photography business! I guess I owe her a debt of gratitude for starting me down this path. 🙂

We got together for a mini shoot this past weekend that didn’t last nearly long enough and left me wanting more time to spend with her. Hopefully I’ll get to see her in front of my camera lens again soon!
