52 Weeks of Photos :: Best of the Week (37/52)

Another Friday, another 52 Week Project photo! This week’s theme was “Best of the Week”. Having photographed eight different dogs over the weekend, narrowing done to just one photograph was not an easy task! In the end, it was the below photo of Tana the Bernese Mountain Dog that won me over. I love the diffuse background, the lines and texture of the bench, and the color. I also love Tana’s expression, and knowing that this photograph was caught at the very end of a shoot with the last rays of light (it was darker out than this photo would have you believe).

As always, the Beautiful Beasties Pet Photography Network 52 Week project is a collaboration of many fantastic artists, each of whom offers up their own interpretation of the week’s theme. This week, I’m pleased to direct you to over to Ann Kearns of Ann Kearns Photography. Ann does great work, so check out hers and the rest of the group’s photos for this week by clicking here!

The Dogs of the CRCVT Program, Class of 2011-12

Shelby

These photos were taken as part of an effort to help raise funds for and awareness of the animals that are rescued every year and taken in to the Cosumnes River College Veterinary Technology (CRCVT) program. The CRCVT program provides students with a rigorous hands-on learning experience in animal nursing, including preventative care, surgery, dentistry, and emergency medicine, as well as many other aspects of animal care. During their eight-month stay with the students, the animals are vaccinated, micro-chipped, spayed or neutered, and given obedience training, before being adopted out to their forever homes.

52 Weeks of Photos :: Wide Open (34/52)

What better way to start your Friday than with some chocolate? 😉

This week’s theme for the BBPPN 52 Week Group Project was “wide open.” Almost immediately, I knew where I wanted to go with the theme. I love shooting at or near maximum aperture (or, in other words, wide open), which so often renders a nice diffuse background that does wonders for isolating the subject and drawing the viewer’s eye to the most important (and, by far, the cutest!) part of the frame. When I saw the below photo of Samantha, I knew I had the shot I wanted. With its gorgeous color palette and diffuse light, this photo called out to me.

52 Weeks of Photos :: Wild Sightings (33/52)

Today marks my first entry in the Beautiful Beasties Pet Photography Network “52 Project” — where participants challenge themselves each week by interpreting an agreed-upon theme and expressing it through photography. It’s a great way to push oneself creatively and just have a little fun.

That’s all great, you’re probably thinking, but what does any of that have to do with the praying mantis? Well, this week’s theme was “wild sightings” — an attempt to turn the camera away from our pets and on other animals that we see (or don’t see) around us, everyday. I had hoped to catch some geese grazing in the fields near my house — they’re very common visitors this time of year — but they didn’t seem interested in what the farmers had planted, so I had to settle for this praying mantis that randomly showed up on our screen door (and that I safely transported to our hedgerow). It was a wild enough sighting for me — I see them maybe once every 1-2 years!

The other cool part about this particular photographic challenge is that all of the participants link to one another’s entries — allowing you to see just how other photographers have interpreted that week’s challenge; follow them all and you’ll end up right back here. This week I have the distinct pleasure of being able to direct you over to Karen Weiler of Posh Pets Photography — click the link to see how she interpreted this week’s theme!

Santa Cruz “Alley” Cat :: Purple Collar Pet Photography

My fiancee and I are in the midst of planning a wedding, and while things haven’t kicked into high-gear just yet we are trying to get our vendors all in order. It was for this reason that we were outside the Buttery on Soquel Ave. in Santa Cruz two weekends ago — where we happened across this very cool cat, Alley! Alley, as her owner told me, is a relatively new designer breed of cat called a “Cheetoh”, a cross between a Bengal and an Ocicat. Alley here is only six months old, but is already good sized! I absolutely loved her markings, and was thrilled that the owner let me snap a couple of quick photos.
